Here is a little blurb from my winter newsletter: If your New Year’s resolution consists of trying to lose some of those holiday pounds, be aware that some diets may have a negative effect on your oral health. Juicing or fruit diets have a lot of sugar and acid which are bad for your teeth by causing staining and erosion of the enamel. Diet pills can cause dry mouth, which leads to an increased risk of tooth decay. Low carb diets may cause bad breath and even acid build up in the blood, called ketoacidosis. Low calorie diets, if too extreme, can cause malnutrition leading to an increased chance of periodontal disease or cavities. Finally, if your diet requires you to eat small snacks frequently, instead of larger meals, make sure you are drinking plenty of water to wash away food particles and stay hydrated.

Our office will be having a Halloween candy buy back, where we will pay kids $1.50 per pound of candy and also give them toothbrushes and toys, in order to promote a healthy mouth and diet. Collected candy will be donated to America’s Moms for Soldiers and sent to US troops overseas! The buy-back will run the Monday through Thursday after Halloween at the office of Dr. Brian Rask, 1 NE 23rd Avenue, Suite 2, Pompano Beach, FL 33062. Please help us spread the word about this great event.

So you hate flossing your teeth because it hurts, makes your gums bleed, takes too long, or the floss breaks or is hard to get in between your teeth. Well, I have the answer for you. It is a sonic flosssing device, called Flossolution. It is designed like an electric toothbrush (and actually is a toothbrush too) that uses sonic energy to easily get the floss in between your teeth! The floss is held between two plastic arms that can fit into the back of even the smallest of mouths and there is a rubber guard that prevents the floss from going too deep into your gums and causing trauma. These arms are disposable and simple to replace, and there is also a brush head attachment so your sonic flosser serves as a toothbrush too! Soon, Flossolution will be releasing a manual model with the same patented Flossguard technology to help protect your gums and make flossing easy. Check out their website at www.flossolution.com for more information or to purchase one. You can also follow Flossolution on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Flossolution/447705135309441 Remember, flossing helps prevent gingivitis, periodontal disease, tooth decay, and bad breath, so if you are not currently using dental floss with success, try the Flossolution.
Every other month, I write a short article on current dental topics for The Light Magazine. For this issue, I described the steps a comprehensive dentist takes to create a beautiful smile for a patient seeking cosmetic dentistry. Please read the article and tell me what you think! http://www.thelightmag.com/creating-a-beautiful-smile/ Below is one recent case of a combination of all porcelain crowns and veneers, including implants, that I completed using the process that I described in my article.
Come out to Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill on Saturday, Febuary 23 for a 5K walk/run, with proceeds benefitting the Truth Outreach Project to educate and prevent oral cancer. Registration starts at 7:30 AM and is $25. Free oral cancer screenings will be available for participants. Oral cancer is the 7th leading cancer in the US, but it is readily detectable and treatable in it’s early stages.
Porcelain Bridge Repair
This gentleman chipped two of the teeth on his porcelain bridge in an accident. Unfortunately, replacing the bridge was going to be too expensive and something that his insurance would not cover. So, a second option of performing a porcelain repair with composite bonding was discussed, which he agreed to. In this procedure, the porcelain is first beveled with a fine diamond bur, then microscopically roughened with air abrasion (fine sandblasting), next it is etched for 90 seconds with hydrofluoric acid and rinsed, then a silane bond enhancer is applied, followed by the priming and bonding agent Optibond FL, next the grayness of the metal is blocked out with a flowable white opaquer, and finally 3M Filtek Supreme Plus composite is shaped, light cured, finished and polished. This cosmetic dentistry gave the patient a very nice esthetic result, at a fraction of the price of a new bridge. Please feel free to ask questions on this procedure and check out other dental procedures that I perform at my Pompano Beach dental office on Facebook at Brian-P-Rask-DMD-PA or you can also send me a tweet @DrBrianRask.
My new Cadent iTero digital impression system! Instead of having to use bad tasting, sticky impression material for crowns, bridges, veneers and Invisalign treatment, I can now scan your teeth with a digital camera that captures the preparations and uses software to produce models or restorations that are more accurate than traditional impressions and stone models…all with more comfort to you, the patient. Check it out at www.cadentinc.com or come in and experience it for yourself!
